How it works

Healthy weight range = height(m)² × [18.5, 24.9]. The range can span 20–30 lbs for average adults. BMI is a population screening tool—athletes, the elderly, and pregnant women may have misleading BMI values. Waist circumference adds context: above 35 inches (women) or 40 inches (men) correlates with metabolic risk independently of BMI.

Input guidance

  • Use measured values (recent weight, height, activity level) rather than guesses.
  • Recalculate every few weeks as your routine and body metrics change.
  • Pair screening metrics with context such as sleep, stress, and medical history.

The formula

A healthy weight range is derived from the normal BMI band (18.5–24.9): weight = BMI × height(m)², solved at both ends for the low and high of the range.

Worked example

For someone 1.70 m tall, a healthy range is 18.5 × 1.70² to 24.9 × 1.70² = about 53.5 kg to 72 kg.

More examples to test

  • Maintenance case: keep activity constant and observe expected baseline ranges.
  • Adjustment case: change only one major variable to understand sensitivity.

How to interpret results

Use results for awareness and planning, then validate with qualified medical or nutrition professionals for individualized decisions.

When this can be inaccurate

Population formulas cannot account for all biological factors such as medical conditions, medication effects, body composition differences, and genetics.

Frequently asked questions

How is a healthy weight range found?+

By applying the normal BMI range (18.5–24.9) to your height, giving a low and high weight rather than a single target.

Is BMI the only factor?+

No. Muscle, frame size, fat distribution, and fitness all matter. BMI is a starting screen, best combined with other measures.

What if I am outside the range?+

It is a prompt to look closer, not a diagnosis. Discuss with a healthcare provider, who can weigh your full health picture.

Can this calculator diagnose a condition?+

No. It is a screening and education tool only, not a clinical diagnosis.

When should I seek professional advice?+

Seek professional advice when results are extreme, persistent, or conflict with symptoms, goals, or prior medical guidance.
