How it works
Percent-off is the quick retail question: take this shelf price, knock X% off, what do I pay and how many dollars did I save? Savings = original × discount%; due today = original − savings. It is intentionally one-directional for checkout mental math and classroom percent practice. It does not reverse-engineer an original from a sale tag—use the discount calculator for that—and it does not model loyalty tiers or BOGO structures beyond treating an effective percent. Confirm whether cashiers apply the markdown before tax.

The formula
Sale price = original price × (1 − percent off ÷ 100). Amount saved = original price × percent off ÷ 100.
Worked example
30% off a $50 item saves 50 × 0.30 = $15, for a $35 sale price.

How do I calculate percent off quickly?+
Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal to get the saving, then subtract. 25% off $80 is 0.25 × 80 = $20 off, so $60.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?+
Divide the sale price by (1 − percent off). A $60 price after 25% off was 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
Can percent off exceed 100%?+
No. 100% off means free; a discount cannot make a price negative, so the maximum meaningful percent off is 100%.
