How it works

UUIDs provide 128-bit identifiers that are unique for practical purposes without a central authority. Version 4 UUIDs rely on random bits; other versions embed time or namespace information. Use them for primary keys, request idempotency, and distributed system references where collisions must be vanishingly unlikely. Do not treat a UUID as a secret auth token. Generate new values when records must not collide across services or offline clients.
