How it works
Fuel cost = (distance / MPG) × price per gallon. For metric: (distance km / L per 100km) × price per liter. Fuel economy drops 10–15% on highway if the EPA rating is city-cycle. AC use, cargo weight, headwinds, and cold temperatures each reduce efficiency 5–25%. Use actual MPG from recent fill-ups for more accurate trip estimates.

The formula
Trip fuel cost = (distance ÷ fuel economy) × price per unit. With mpg and dollars per gallon: cost = distance ÷ mpg × price.
Worked example
A 300-mile trip at 30 mpg with $3.50/gallon gas: 300 ÷ 30 × 3.50 = 10 gallons × $3.50 = $35.
