How it works

Volume = area × depth. Standard mulch depth is 2–4 inches (5–10 cm). Convert to consistent units before calculating. 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = about 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft. Cedar and hardwood mulch last 2–3 years; wood chips last longer. Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks (volcano mulching) to prevent rot and pest damage. Add 10% waste factor for irregular shapes.
